More important to D.J. right now was the question: Did Rich stand behind the attempts on McCall's life? All because he'd seen McCall take his picture speaking to a person Rich wanted no one to know he'd spoken to? Murder seemed a long way to go for something so minor. Whatever Rich had involved himself in must be more far reaching and dangerous than D.J. could fathom right now. To try and kill McCall, and D.J. as well, a police officer and his ex-wife, seemed more stupid than she'd given Rich credit for being.
But someone wanted them both dead, and the picture held the first clue she'd been able to discover that pointed to anyone. Rich had been looking for hershe'd thought to get money, but maybe for another reason. Rich knew about this cabin. Her father had brought him here to hunt whenever Rich came home from Chicago as a teen, continuing to do so after Rich and D.J. married. Rich surely remembered the lodge and easily could have come hunting for her, and McCall, this time.
D.J. stuffed the picture down her shirt and crept toward the front of the house. She'd seen the phone on the floor next to the couch. She had to get help. She had to find McCall, and they both had to get the hell out of there before Rich came back from wherever he'd disappeared to. She wouldn't make the mistake of thinking Rich Halloran had returned to Lakeview without finding what he'd come looking for. She of all people knew how tenacious Rich could be when his own neck rested on the line.
